Estates|
Newton Rigg has working farms, semi-natural woodland, SSSIs and wide range of biodiversity on site.
The University’s farm at Newton Rigg operates under dual educational and commercial aims and as such, all enterprises are monitored for profitability. The farm is divided naturally into two main parcels known as Newton Rigg and Sewborwens covering 108 and 102 hectares respectively. Both parcels support a diverse land use base reflecting the significant changes in the industry since 2000 and continue to run a traditional flock of 400 North of England mules put to Texel, Suffolk or Charlois rams. The flock is self-replenishing operating a stratified system with Low Beckside|, our upland farm in the Lake District. The farm also operates an integrated game rearing unit which rears around 1000 red-legged partridges annually for estate shoots, as part of the game keeping taught programmes.
Facilities for forest research include two aboreta, a short rotation coppice trial, a mixed woodland and greenhouse and laboratory space. The campus hosts a “Breeding Seedling Orchard” containing English oak (Quercus robur) seedlings from 40 UK and European locations. This is part of a national network of sites offering scope for genetic research.
The campus also owns a 27.3 hectare wood, Eden Brows, on the banks of the River Eden. A mix of commercial Larch plantation and semi- natural woodland the site is used extensively for practical teaching and training sessions.
