Research in the National School of Forestry

Research in our School is clustered into four main themes:

Brash Bales | Biomass and sustainable energy|
It is important to reduce our use of fossil fuels in order to mitigate against further climate change. To do this successfully other alternative energy sources must be found and their sustainability must be assessed. Research focuses on woody biomass.
Young Wood oak trees |

Forests and woodland for climate mitigation
|
Our research into the role of forests and woodland for climate change mitigation focusses on soil and woody biomass carbon storage.

Biodiversity: conservation and climate adaptation| (mainly via our Centre for Wildlife Conservation|)
The Centre for Wildlife Conservation has local, national and international research interests across a diverse range of wildlife conservation topics. For example, we are developing an economic model for brown bear-based ecotourism in Canada, whilst at a local level we are developing a population viability model for red squirrel populations on the Solway Plain.
