University of Cumbria graduate Heather Massey has been awarded a prestigious US marketing scholarship and the opportunity to travel to the States to enhance her business skills.

Heather, 27 from Carlisle, was awarded the US Marketing Scholarship, a programme organised and supported by North America unit of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and the British Consulate General in Chicago.  Sponsored by Ellis Goodman Foundation, Kellogg School of Management and British Airways, the scholarship involved a week long trip to the Kellogg School in Chicago in April. The aim was to understand the importance of effective marketing in the USA.  It identifies issues which must be considered and actions which must be taken to develop an effective long-term trading relationship in such a challenging market.  Heather is one of only six people to be selected for the scholarship this year.

Heather graduated from St Martin’s College (now University of Cumbria) with a Business Management and Marketing degree in July 2007.  She has been working for Penrith based company Primasonics International Limited since last year as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) associate, a scheme run by the University of Cumbria to provide graduate talent to businesses for long term projects.  The KTP scheme also involves the university sharing its academic expertise with the business.  Heather’s project with the firm has been to help them break into new international markets.

Primasonics International is the world leading audiosonic acoustic cleaner company. As part of the scholarship, Heather will also be spending a second week as an executive attachment with US company Cougar Industries, who operate in the same industry as Primasonics.

The scholarship has provided Heather with a great opportunity to develop her expertise and benefit Primasonics in the process.  She explains:

“On a personal level this has been a fantastic opportunity for me to attend such a prestigious management school and be tutored by world-renowned Professors.  It’s given me an invaluable insight into the US business and marketing culture and enabled me to meet and share experiences with fellow marketing executives.”
