Work experience
The route to employability is not only paved with specialist knowledge. Employers look for real world experience as well as a good degree. At the University of Cumbria, we strive to give our students every opportunity to gain valuable experience in the workplace and the community.
All of our sport students have ample time to explore their field on placement. With our strong links with local partner organisations such as schools, local authorities and sports clubs, we can offer an exciting range of placement opportunities. We also encourage our students to get involved with community projects. This not only provides experience; it also allows students to make valuable contacts in the industry.
Testimonials
“Lancaster City Council’s Community Engagement Service (Wellbeing) has been delighted to support student community engagement projects around the city in the last few years. The partnership has proven effective in delivering events and opportunities to young people across the city, as well as supporting students in acquiring important job-specific skills to enhance their employment prospects in an increasingly difficult job marketplace." - Stuart Glover, Sport and Physical Activity Development Officer
"StreetGames, the national sports charity and Sport England centre of expertise has been working with the University of Cumbria for two years, and we are delighted that this relationship has developed into the provision of the opportunities for a number of students to develop their own project to enhance their experience and provide them with the skills needed to step into the world of sports development straight after their education. Our work together has provided an insight into the work of StreetGames and an alternative approach to delivering community sport. We are excited to be working with the university and to see what the students can create for children and young people around Lancaster." - John Downes, National Programme Manager
“Carlisle City Council’s Community Engagement Wellbeing Team have for the last four years had the pleasure of supporting and working alongside students from the University of Cumbria . Our partnership has been very productive and has shown effective outcomes throughout the varied projects delivered across the city. The projects we have delivered together have given the students an insight into the work and benefits of sport development and we believe the students can take this experience forward into their chosen careers.” Tracy Gannon / Paul Frampton Community Development Officers Carlisle City Council.
