MA,PGD,PGC Contemporary Fine Art
This research-based taught course is primarily self-directed study, organised on a modular basis. Your individually negotiated programme of independent studio and research work is agreed in consultation with, and then supervised by, either the course leader or an appropriate member of the fine art team.
Seminars provide the framework for critical debate on a range of subjects, including your own practice. This aspect of the programme draws upon the diverse specialisms of the fine art team, along with visiting artists and practitioners of national and international repute.
The course has three distinct stages. The first stage focuses on research methodologies and how they impact on fine art practice, the importance of proposal writing, your negotiated learning agreement and the development of your personal practice. The second stage encourages enquiry into working strategies and concepts in the context of contemporary fine art, develops your critical understanding of evolving practice, and results in a completed body of your work for public exhibition. At Masters level you extend the development of your personal practice, creating a more substantial body of work. You also produce an analytical and reflective deconstruction of your practice within the developments in fine art, or a dissertation on an agreed topic.Early exit may lead to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate at the end of the first stage, or a Postgraduate Diploma at the end of the second stage. Our assessments seek to measure the performance and development of theory and practice in your developing ability to accept, gather and process information, using it in an informed, relevant and critical manner.Recent graduates have been successful in developing their position within the visual arts, exhibiting nationally and internationally. They are also at the centre of initiatives within Cumbria related to contemporary arts.
Our staff are highly qualified and regularly update their skills and knowledge, pursuing their research interests through national and international exhibitions as well as publications. All academic staff who teach on the Masters programme are active in research up to PhD level.
You need either a 2:1 or first-class Honours degree or an equivalent qualification, or relevant industrial/commercial/practice-based experience in your proposed area of study. You are required to present a folio of evidence - both visual and written material - to substantiate your initial study proposal which will be discussed at interview. Our capacity to resource and facilitate individual proposals will also be considered when assessing applications.
