BA(Hons) Adventure & Media

Why you should apply for this course.

Today’s outdoor industry requires individuals who can provide a high degree of competent leadership and capture the elements of adventures as they unfold. This is a dedicated programme that integrates adventure activities and the visual image.

The planning and undertaking of fieldwork and expedition work, which may be abroad, is a feature of the programme. It equips you for any field of endeavour where tested leadership skills, sound logistical planning and creative thought are essential ingredients.

What is this course about?

This is an exciting degree combining adventure activity management and media skills. In year one you will undertake aspects of practical outdoor activity instruction and expedition planning, as well as studying still photography applied to adventurous activities—and you’ll engage in group management through experiential learning projects. These themes are developed in the second and third years with modules in expedition management, adventure filming, practical outdoor leadership and outdoor activity management.

The outdoor education courses are all delivered through a range of formal lectures, seminars, workshops and discussion groups. Practical work, on the campus and throughout the local area, will naturally play an important role in your learning. You are expected to carry out independent study throughout the course.

Due to our excellent reputation, we receive a high volume of applications for this course. Consequently, all applicants should expect to be interviewed by one of our tutors as part of the admissions process.

Assessment is through a range of techniques—you sit some examinations, but there is a stronger emphasis on investigative work. The nature of the subject means that presentations, practical assessments and portfolios are all used as well as traditional reports and essay work. Assessment may also be based on group as well as individual work.

What do our students say?

“Being a student with the outdoor division has really opened my eyes to learning. It has challenged my understanding of working with adventure, and guided me towards my own ambitions and aspirations. The tutors clearly know what they are doing and are genuinely interested in what you have done too.”

What can the course lead to?

Graduates are pursuing careers in outdoor instruction, educational development and youth work, in media production for independent enterprises and as freelancers for media outlets. The course also equips you for any field of endeavour where tested leadership skills, sound logistical planning and creative thought are essential ingredients. Our students have gone on to secure careers in HM Forces, the emergency services and teaching.
