Why study with us?
This course is designed to produce graduates who can apply their knowledge and IT skills to real-world problems and understand why certain techniques, methods and practices should be adapted and followed.
IT and computing form an essential element of almost all organisations, from small companies through to international organisations. At a personal level technology is increasingly important in everyday life, mobile phones, the internet and access to public services.
The academically focused elements tend to be assessed through reports, papers and examinations while the practically focused elements will be assessed through application, project work and critical evaluation. This combination of academic and applied skills will place you in a strong position upon graduation.
What can this course lead to?
Many of our graduates go on to work in IT and computing, including software and web development, network administration and user support.
In recent years we have successfully placed graduates in jobs ranging from aerial surveying (making use of specialist Geographical Information Systems knowledge gained on the course) through to IT entrepreneurs who have set up their own IT companies.
Employers range from small companies through to very large multi-national organisations and we have a track record of placing graduates with companies across the entire range, for example Sellafield Ltd, Agilisys, Capita, regional councils, educational institutions as well as smaller organisations such as Rocket Consulting Ltd and M&K Update Ltd.
Course Summary
The course is a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and online sessions, in addition to workshops, group work and client-led projects.
Taught by a team of dedicated professionals, the teaching and learning methods used are varied and include theoretical content, practical coursework, lab-based exercises and case-studies. In the final year a dissertation and group project form a major part of your studies.
You will develop your understanding of modern IT systems and your skills in designing, building and using them. In particular you will focus on the application of computers and IT to business problems and study subjects such as: project management; software development; systems analysis and design; web development; databases; computing infrastructure; information security; and personal development and employability skills.
You will be encouraged to investigate innovations in ICT technologies and their applications such as mobile technologies, the use of geographical and location based information systems and open source software.
Case Studies

The course was brilliant at teaching core techniques that are relevant today, however it was the freedom to explore other technologies where the course really excelled. In fact, I’ve built and continue to run systems built on things I learnt at university. You will always be learning within the IT sector, but you will always need the foundations provided by this course."
