Module Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) for In-Service Teachers: Physics

  • Location Lancaster
  • Duration Short course
  • Mode of study Part-time
  • Start date March 2012

Why study with us?

The SKE course at the University of Cumbria is based on an approach that will encourage you to learn within your subject area and draw on this to develop a deep subject understanding of key structures, concepts and ways of thinking. This approach enables you to develop your learning to support your classroom pedagogy. As a result we are able to help you develop the skills you will need in the context of Physics.

Applications are currently being invited for the 2012 course.

Course Summary

In 2012 there will be an introductory session in the beginning of March. There will be fifteen further face to face half days spread through the spring and summer terms held on a Thursday (2-5pm).

You will be encouraged to work actively on physics both collaboratively and as individuals. You will particularly be challenged to develop your own understanding of the physics in the Key Stage 3 and 4 curricula by examining concepts from a variety of perspectives and examining misconceptions in learning physics. During the face to face sessions you will be able to explore physics including topics such as forces, energy and electricity incorporating how to apply this knowledge in the context of How Science Works. You will also be encouraged to reflect upon the implications of your learning for your classroom practice.

You will also be supported in auditing your subject knowledge and developing appropriate targets for development for the duration of the course. You will have access to our resources on the virtual learning environment (VLE) and will be encouraged to engage with this in order to meet your development targets. Tasks will be set through the year making use of the VLE to develop your physics between face to face sessions.

Successful completion of this subject knowledge course will be assessed by a short portfolio task drawing on the work undertaken. Participants will be required to demonstrate progress against individual targets. In addition you will be able to undertake a classroom research module to enable you to demonstrate that you can embed your learning in your practice. Successful completion of this module would lead to the award of 20 Master’s level credits in Education.

There are no course fees for the in-service SKE course as this is a TDA funded course.
