The Postgraduate Certificate: Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care course has been developed to facilitate the development of knowledge and skills in three specific areas: health assessment/ differential diagnosis/ clinical decision making, leadership and the adoption/ evaluation of evidence based practice. This award is studied part-time, through distance learning and work-based learning. The PgC and MSc Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care are accredited by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).

There are two residential workshops for all students – a four-day induction workshop and a three-day pre OSCE workshop. The four day induction workshop will be held from Monday 3rd - Thursday 6th September 2012.

We received the best overall student satisfaction scores of any Health Faculty in the North West in the 2009 National Student Survey.

This programme will enhance your ability to gain employment in more senior roles as an advanced practitioner, within your chosen field of healthcare.

You will develop the qualities needed for employment in circumstances requiring the assessment, diagnosis, problem solving, clinical decision making and treatment of patients with undifferentiated undiagnosed conditions. You will develop the qualities needed in circumstances requiring sound judgement, personal responsibility and initiative in complex and unpredictable professional environments.
 
The programme will enable practitioners to meet the requirements laid out in the knowledge and skills framework providing opportunities for career advancement.

Completing the MSc will also enhance your abilities to continue to further advanced study, for instance to MPhil/PhD level.

Selection criteria

You must be current on the NMC Nursing register or equivalent and have regular access to an advanced practice environment. You will have five years experience post qualification and require a clinical facilitator (either a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner) to support your learning and undertake your practice assessment.

At interview if you do not demonstrate previous knowledge of Human Anatomy and Pathophysiology you will have to undertake a pre-course entry workshop that will provide evidence of engagement with four tasks designed to improve your knowledge in anatomy and physiology. This is a non-academic course, and costs £80.00. This course will run in May and July 2012 by distance learning.

Your application needs to be supported by statements from two referees, one of whom must be your current employer.
 
You will be interviewed for selection for this programme by a member of the programme team. This interview may be conducted by telephone.
