Why study with us?

This module will develop knowledge and understanding in the assessment and management of children and adults presenting with asthma. The importance of history taking will be emphasised and how to recognise when a patient’s condition is becoming unstable. Evidence based treatments as well as lifestyle, health promotion and concordance will be reviewed in order to promote the best outcomes for the patient with asthma.

Definitions, symptoms, prevalence, pathophysiology, trigger factors, means of assessment for diagnosis and in assessment of severity of exacerbation, drugs and delivery systems, patient / carer education, action plans, biopsychosocial effects of chronic illness

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Critically review the pathophysiological processes occurring in the development of asthma
  • Critically evaluate the methods used in making a diagnosis of asthma
  • Obtain a patient history to identify and critically analyse the influencing factors in assessing a patient with asthma
  • Critically evaluate the treatment options used in asthma and recommend appropriate evidence based therapeutic interventions
  • Apply evidence based health promotion interventions to patients and carers in the management of asthma including the management of the biopsychosocial implications of this diagnosis
