Policing ProfileThis new programme has been designed to create a formal academic foundation for the vocational training police officers undertake throughout their careers.

The course develops your critical thinking about policing, policy and practice through a range of compulsory and optional modules.

The Foundation Degree in Policing Studies (with Pathways) has been developed to complement and enhance existing police officer development as part of the ongoing partnership between the University of Cumbria and Cumbria Constabulary. 

More recently this partnership has expanded to include a number of northern forces and the College of Policing. 

Pathways include Policing Studies, Leadership & Management and Criminal Investigation*. 

CoP Approved ProviderThe University already holds Approved Provider status for its range of pre-join qualifications, and is currently working closely with the College of Policing extend recognition to the new pathways.

The programme is delivered via Flexible Distributed Learning online and approximately three study weekend workshops throughout the year.

To be eligible to apply to this programme you will have either previously studied the University Award in Policing Knowledge with the University of Cumbria or be a serving police officer who is confirmed in post. 

*Please note that the Criminal Investigation pathway will be available from September 2015, subject to validation.

What can this course lead to?

The programme offers pathways at foundation degree level and the opportunity to progress to a purposely-designed ‘BSc Top up’ qualification to continue this learning.

Graduates will have the opportunity to top up to a BSc Hons degree consisting of a selection of core and optional modules to enhance the three FdSc pathways. Top-up degree students also complete a work-based research project.

Further postgraduate study is available to students in the form of an MSc or MBA qualifications.
