Where will this course take place?

In 2012 and 2013, the Applied Science top-up will be based at our Penrith campus. In 2014, the course will be moving to our Ambleside campus.

What can this course lead to?

Emphasis is given to the development of transferable skills enhancing employability. The course is designed to produce high-quality graduates eligible to enter a wide variety of careers in areas such as bioscience, health care, chemicals, food production and energy. The skills and knowledge developed also open the door to general graduate opportunities such as teaching, finance, IT and management, as well as providing an excellent basis for postgraduate study.  

Course Summary

The theoretical elements of the programme are supported by the provision of laboratory sessions in which you become proficient in modern scientific techniques that are currently used in industry and public sector organisations.

You will be equipped with the knowledge base, flexibility and confidence to tackle problems that you may face in a career in science. The course encourages you to develop both independent and team-working skills for problem solving, time management and self-organization, as well as written communication and presentational skills required by professionals engaged in scientific organisations and the wider workplace. 

Specimen modules include Advanced Genetics, Microbial Biotechnology, Applied analytical science and the Biochemistry of drugs and toxic chemicals. The Dissertation allows you to develop your own area of specialism.

This is an innovative course with a strong vocational base. It will challenge and develop you, so you become more effective in the application of new scientific skills and knowledge.
