Guy and the Ice Factor
"While on my course at Newton Rigg, I was involved in many adventurous activities, but one which sticks in my mind is ice climbing."
During my work experience placement I visited the Ice Factor in Scotland where I worked extremely hard for three weeks. It was worth it though—at the end of the three weeks my employers were so impressed they decided to set up a trainee scheme for me!
This apprenticeship lasted two years and although I was paid a checkout operator’s wage throughout, during those years I gained a wide spectrum of experience and knowledge. Three years on and now I’m guiding groups into the hills both summer and winter; I take clients rock climbing both indoors and out; and I also teach indoor ice climbing to a huge range of customers from kids to pensioners.
“Currently, I work as a climbing instructor/mountain leader, but, having earned the trust of my employees, I’m also heavily involved with improving the business and training new members of staff. I’ve worked very hard to get to this level but I’m not stopping yet—I’ve still got more goals to pursue!”
