Poetry inspires fashion
Exploring poetry from nearly two and a half centuries ago provided the starting point for a fashion project by National Diploma Art and Design year-one students
Directed by course lecturer Jen Bibby, the theme for the project was “a celebration of Robbie Burns’ poetry”. 2009 was declared the year of poetry in Scotland to commemorate his birth 250 years ago and the brief behind the project was to design a celebratory party dress based on a chosen Robbie Burns’ poem.
"It was great to work with a tutor who was so enthusiastic as it meant I could produce something I didn’t know I was
capable of.” Jayne Acton (fashion student)
“Hard work but great fun” was the general opinion. Most of the students modelled their own designs but a few brought in models especially for the shoot. Two other students from the course undertook all the photography.
“ Photographing the fashion cat walk show allowed me to look into fashion photography. It also allowed me to learn more about using the camera because each photograph had to count, the models’ movements were rather quick which left me with only a short period of time to capture the right image.’’
Yasmin Foster (photography student)“
