Sources of funding: up to £30 per week with EMA or ALG

The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a weekly payment of up to £30 per week, depending on your household income. The money should help you with the day-to-day costs of studying, such as travel, books and equipment for your course. A large proportion of full-time students, aged 16 to 18 years, qualify for an EMA payment, which is paid to those with parents or carers earning up to £30,810 per year. It’s available to many young people for two years and, for some young people, for up to three years. Depending on the progress you make with your course, you can even get a bonus of £100! Check out www.direct.gov.uk/ema or ring the EMA helpline on 0800 121 8989.

Adult Learning Grants (ALG) of up to £30 per week may be available for those of you who are 19 or over. You can find more details at www.direct.gov.uk/alg| ring the ALG helpline on 0800 121 8989.
