It's been another action packed summer of fun activities which even the weather couldn't spoil.  Two hundred and fifty children between the ages of  5 and 12 years enjoyed a range of activities and games led by qualfied and experienced members of staff who are studying various degree courses at the University of Cumbria.

The activities on offer included fencing, karate, circus skills, climbing wall, archery, adventure challenges and a drama workship.  Themed days also proved very popular including a pirate, high school musical and olympic days.  The OFSTED registered programme had up to 60 children a day on each session with waiting lists for the most popular activities.

Silver Medals All Round - July 2009

SMARTACaustriateam09

SMARTAC Gymnastics Display Team recently represented Great Britain at a World "Gym For Life" Competition held in Dornbirn, Austria.  The team consisted of 18 gymnasts, one Team Manager, one Choreographer, one Coach and three Welfare Officers all from the Lancaster and Morecambe area.  The gymnasts compete for the club and over half of them help the club by coaching at the many sessions held at the University of Cumbria Sports Complex at Lancaster.

Altogether there were 80 clubs from 27 countries representing three continents. All underwent a selection process - a total of 2,000 gymnasts.  After two days of elimination, 14 clubs were selected for the finals and given Gold Medal status.  As expected, nations with a strong ancestral tradition in gymnastics (Switzerland, Norway, Germany and Italy) qualified several clubs each.  Observers were excited to note the emergence of newer groups from countries such as Estonia and Turkey.  The quality of performance was astoundingly high and diversity adbundant.

The standard and quality of the SMARTC performance was superb.  The judges recognised this and they were rewarded by gaining silver status and all receiving silver medals.

Anyone interested in starting gymnastics sessions should contact the University of Cumbria Sports Complex in Lancaster on 01524 526526.  Sessions are held on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays.

The men's rugby league were meant to play Bangor in a play off match to decide who had the right to gain promotion to the Student Rugby League National North Division.  However, the Students' Union, in conjunction with the team, decided not to enter the play offs as promotion would have been a great burden next season.  The Rugby League team have a small squad of which nine will be lost next year.  This would include international players and other members who are the backbone of one of our most successful teams.  Promotion would have pitted the team against other Northern Universities of which some have Rugby academies.  Nevertheless, the result is a brilliant outcome for the end of the season.  Well done.

Although the men's football 3rd team drew against Bolton's 1st team 2-2 at an away match, this result saw the team at the top of their division - another excellent outcome to be applauded.

Rowing the Length of Lake Windermere - Live on Radio

Mountain Rescue logo On Sunday 14 December 2008 students and staff from the Ambleside Campus took part in a challenge to raise money for Mountain Rescue.  Using a rowing machine from the Sports Centre set up in Market Square, Ambleside, students and staff rowed the 12 mile length of Lake Windermere with help from some Christmas shoppers and members of the Mountain Rescue team.

The event was sponsored by the clothing shop "Fat Face" and the Sports Centre which took place live on The Bay Radio.

Up the Wall - December 2008

On Saturday 13 December young people from Ambleside's "Up the Wall" programme went on their first trip to Kendal Climbing Wall. This was a wonderful way to end what has been a very successful eight week programme where all the youngsters have learnt the basics of climbing, how to tie knots and belay.  Mark Eddy, Instructor, said "The most important thing many have learnt is how to trust others for their safety and to be trusted in return".

UptheWallKendal_215x182 The success of this initiative has been very much due to the hours volunteered by first year Outdoor Studies students at the University of Cumbria who have been giving one to one instruction, under the careful eye of Mark Eddy. The students will be benefiting from the "Get Qualified" scheme, which aims to help students pay for National Governing Body awards when they carry out volunteer work in the community.  Richard Lemmy, Head of the School of Outdoor Studies said "This is just the sort of programme we would wish to see our students taking part in - adding value to the local community as well as to their own experience at Ambleside".

The programme has been organised by Cumbria Constabulary, University of Cumbria, Young Cumbria and is funded by the Kelsick Education Foundation, St Mary's Parish Council and the Rotary Club, with sponsporship from the Ambleside outdoor shop "Lakes Climber".

Fusehill Fives - First Season Summary

Wednesday 26 November 2008 saw the first Fusehill Fives football season come to a close, with the team One in Ten of Us Has It being crowned champions!

The league has been played over the last six weeks with five teams in total taking part.  Although One in Ten of Use Has It dominated results throughout the season, the remaining league positions went down to the wire being decided on the final day.

Early favourites Lucozade United made a good start, however, a defeat ultimately cost them the title.  The battle for the third spot was very tight with any one of the remaining teams in a position to take it leading in to the final week.  Eventually it came down to goal difference with the surprise team of Whales proving that a solid defence and strong goal-keeping can pay dividends.

Fusehill Fives will return in the New Year so anyone interested in entering a team please contact the sports centre.  Teams are welcome from University of Cumbria students based on any of the Carlisle Campuses.

Up the Wall - November 2008Up the wall

The Sports facilities at the Ambleside Campus, in partnership with the Cumbria Constabulary and the Parish Council at Ambleside, have put together a climbing wall programme for local youths in an effort to keep them off the streets at a time of year when previously the local area has had concerns in the rise in anti-social behaviour.  The initiative called "Up the Wall" offers local youths a free, action packed Friday evening to benefit from active training, develop new skills and enjoyment.  The instruction uses the skills of numerous University of Cumbria students volunteering their time to assist the young people.  The project is funded by the Kelsick Education Foundation, St Mary's Parish Concil and the Rotary Club.
