What funding is available?

The NHS pays a student bursary as a contribution to living costs for students studying NHS funded courses.

For DipHE nurses, the basic bursary is non-means tested and non-repayable. Additional, means tested allowances are available for students with dependants.

For Health Professions degree students, the basic bursary and additional allowances are all means tested upon household income.

The NHS has a bursary calculator which will give you an estimate of funding available. Entitlement depends on the course you are applying for and household income.

A reduced rate maintenance loan is available for students on Health Professions degree which is not means tested upon household income. The amount you receive is dependent upon living with your parents or living away from home. The maximum sums available for 2011-12 are £1,744 for living in the parental home and £2,324 for living away from home. The loan becomes repayable the April after graduation if you are earning above £15,000. (n.b. Students on DipHE Nursing are not eligible for the loan).

Social Work bursary

BA Social Work - The Department of Health will also pay a non-means tested Social Work Bursary of £4,575 to students who meet the residency requirements (for students from England and Wales only).  This is non-repayable and paid in three termly instalments.  Please check your eligibility for this bursary on the website: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/students

Please note that whilst this bursary is administered by the NHS, it is different to an NHS bursary for nursing or health professions students.  If you tick the box to say you are applying for an NHS bursary, rather than Social Work bursary then your funding organisation will think you are funded by the NHS and will not award you a tuition fee loan or maintenance loan.

How to apply for your reduced rate student loan

Please apply for your loan through your funding body, at your earliest opportunity.

Ensure that you tick, on your application form, that you are receiving an NHS means-tested bursary.  Remember that you will not be required to submit any financial information as your loan is not means-tested upon household income.

If you are from Scotland, please apply online through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS)

Students from Wales, apply through Student Finance Wales
