News and newspapers

There are several ways of accessing news resources, both current and archived. 
  • Browse paper copies of newspapers held in the library
  • Read newspapers online
  • Search the electronic collections of newspaper articles, past and present
  • Use news websites on the internet.

Electronic newspapers

Most newspapers are available online and at present most are free.  Some have archives you can search.   But rather than searching individual newspapers, it makes sense to search one of our newspaper collections enabling you to search many newspapers in one go. These collections are found in the eresources.  They can be accessed both on and off campus using your network login and they include searchable current and historical newspaper archives which contain many full-text articles.   

Nexis UK  provides full-text access to a large number of international, national and local newspapers.   

British Library Newspapers – Nineteenth Century contains full runs of 48 newspapers selected by the British Library to best represent Nineteenth Century Britain. 

British Newspapers 1600 -1900  The most significant digital collection of British historic newspapers, including pamphlets. 

The Burney Collection Newspaper Archive represents the largest single collection of 17th and 18th Century British news media, gathered by the Rev. Charles Burney (1757 – 1817).    

Regional Business News provides full text access to a range of international papers and news transcripts, including the Washington Times, the Banking Wire etc.

The big project world wide news is a free site that provides links to online versions of UK and international newspapers, either published or available in English.   

News on the web and RSS feeds

Current news websites are widely available on the Internet. Most TV channel UK and international have their own sites. They publish news as it breaks, but their archive can be limited to a specific time period.

All allow you to set up RSS feeds. These are news feeds which allow you to see when websites have added new content, and can be set up to be received on your mobile phone or to an email address. Find out more about RSS feeds.
