Postal loans

A postal loan service is available for the following groups of students free of charge:

  • part time students

  • students on a distance learning course

  • students based at Tower Hamlets

  • students at a partner institution
  • full time students on a placement of more than four weeks. You need to register in advance of your placement by completing an application form, have it signed by a tutor and hand it in at your campus library. You need to allow five days for your application to be processed. You only need complete one form for each academic year, providing you give us the dates of all your placements for the year.

Distance learning, part time students and students at the London sites do not need to complete a form.

To request a postal loan:

  • Look up your book on the library catalogue, click on and follow the instructions, choosing Postal Loan as your collection site
  • Most books and pamphlets can be posted out but we reserve the right not to post very large or valuable items
  • Books will be sent to your term time address, unless you request otherwise, and can be posted abroad. You are responsible for making sure we have the correct address
  • You are required to pay the return postage and you are responsible for the book until it is received by the University library
  • Books sent by post must be returned if they are requested by another user
  • Books can only be renewed if they are not requested by another borrower
  • Individual copies of books are designated either 1 week, 4 week or 6 week loan. 1 week postal loans are issued for an extra week to allow time for postage.  Check the due date inside the book when you receive it and remember to renew or return it before it is due back, otherwise you will incur a fine
  • you will not be able to renew books that have been requested by another borrower
