The Lanes in Carlisle city centre is the largest shopping centre in Cumbria and the Borders. A mixture of high-street chains and independent shops are set in an open and welcoming environment.
Seasonal events and continental markets take place throughout the year in the city centre.
Carlisle Market Hall has stalls for everything from fresh meat and veg, haberdashery, clothes, flowers, stationery and much more.

Carlisle’s Independent Stores
Carlisle has a healthy collection of high street stores favoured by students, such as Topshop and TK Maxx, but it doesn’t stop there.
If you’re looking for a little more variety in your wardrobe you’ll find the city also has a collection of unique clothes shops with student-friendly prices.
The Changing Room, located in the Lowther Arcade, is the perfect place to pick up dresses to suit any occasion. Leona Pennington has been running the store for 18 months. Having 10 years worth of experience, she now hires or sells a wide selection of dresses. Designer lines stocked include Lipsy, Mori Lee and Tiffany Prom.
Leona said: “I get quite a lot of students through my doors as my stock is good quality and affordable.” The Changing Room offers a 10 per cent discount to those with a valid NUS card.
On Bank Street, Carlisle, Room 26 is run by Andrew Wornham and stocks contemporary menswear. The shop has been open for 16 years and carries ranges from Boss, Armani, and Lacoste, as well as many others.
Room 26 is aimed at young men and is said to be popular with students due to the choice, however, there’s no student discount on offer.
Beau Boutique can be found in Carlyle’s Court and it is open Tuesday-Saturday, selling a mixture of casual to more formal dresses. Brands stocked include Forever Unique, Sugarhill Boutique and Jovonna London. Run by Hania McIntyre, the stock is aimed at 18-40s and Hania hopes shoppers appreciate the sense of fun in the collection.
Beau Boutique currently sells to a lot of students and offers a 10 per cent discount with the ‘Local VIP’ card with plans to offer a student discount soon.
Image on Bank Street has been open for 20 years and currently sells modern menswear clothing. Brands Police, Voi and Duck & Cover are amongst those stocked. Run by Brian Marshall, the clothes are aimed at an under 30s market. The prices are very reasonable.
