Nightlife
Whether you like dancing, listening or performing, Lancaster will provide you with a vibrant atmosphere at night time.
Lancaster pubs range from the old cask-ale quaint pubs along the canal to those that boast live music and dance floors to kick-start your night out.
It’s sweet at The Sugarhouse
Combine the sounds of a great playlist with £1.50 jagerbombs and you have a recipe for a great night at The Sugarhouse, a student only club which offers a cheap and very cheerful night out.
The Sugarhouse has capacity for over 1,300 people with two rooms playing different types of music. The club is run and owned by Lancaster Students’ Union but is open to University of Cumbria students.
Kelly Parsons, marketing and events assistant for Lancaster Students Union said: “Our prices are student-friendly. Before midnight we charge £3 and after midnight it’s £4. There is a guest list people can apply for via our website, for birthdays and socials. We have various drinks offers that we like to mix up according to what’s popular.”
Like most good clubs The Sugarhouse plays different types of music at the same time. The club also runs a range of popular themed nights.
Kelly added: “We currently run two nights a week which are ‘Old’s Cool’ on a Friday night, with DJ Simba in the Front Room providing alternative – mainly RnB and dub step – music and DJ LouD in the main room with old classics, which is anything from the thirties up to the nineties.
“Then there is ‘PLAY’ on a Saturday night with DJs Defjax and Cawky in the main room with chat anthems, mainstream current tracks and a bit of dub step and alternative thrown in. We also have DJ Melo in the front room who plays the best of indie music for us.”
The Sugarhouse is also open on other nights during the week.
Music in Lancaster
For a small town Lancaster punches above its weight when it comes to live music. Not only does the town have a music festival, it also has a variety of venues for students to play and see live music. Student Union Community Sabbatical Tom Underwood gives some insight into some of the music hotspots in Lancaster.
The Robert Gillow
Many of Lancashire’s leading folk and jazz musicians come to The Robert Gillow pub time and time again to perform to packed audiences. The pub has a great atmosphere and is on Market Street.
The Dalton Rooms
A trendy, modern restaurant that has a grand piano and a contemporary atmosphere. It is similar to the Gilded Lily in Carlisle but with live music and events. It is in Dalton Square in the town centre.
The Bobbin
This has live bands every week and it’s often heavy rock stuff. It has ‘battle of the bands’ nights with bands such as Cyberdyne, Crystalline Theory, Big Door Open and Bloodyard. It is located near the bus station on Cable Street.
Lancaster University
Lancaster University has live music in their library which UoC students are welcome to attend. Some big bands such as Florence and the Machine have played there recently.
