Introduction

This student charter sets out our commitments to you, makes clear what we expect from you and will work in partnership to achieve.

Please note that some services (such as catering and accommodation) may vary at different campuses and locations.

Please see the web link references for more detailed information including our regulations and processes.

Note: The Charter is not intended to be a legally binding document and is simply an outline of what to expect and what is expected.
This is also a pilot Student Charter which is intended to take note of student feedback and review in order to develop for future years.

When you apply

You can expect us to:

  • provide timely and accurate information and advice.

We will expect you to:

  • provide us with the documentation we request within the timescales specified.

Learning and teaching

You can expect us to:

  • teach you in accordance with our course outlines and to provide you with the learning appropriate to your chosen career
  • inform you of learning outcomes and teaching and assessment methods
  • keep you updated on timetable details
  • provide support and guidance if you are on a placement
  • provide regular scheduled contact with named academic staff.

We expect you to:

  • fulfil course requirements as specified in your programme and module guides
  • actively engage in your learning, ask for advice and help if you need it
  • avoid taking breaks during semesters and/or any placement.

  • agree a suitable professional placement, prepare you for it and support you whilst on it.

Assessment

You can expect us to:

  • advise you of assessment arrangements and rules
  • give you feedback on assessments and regulatory criteria
  • send you an academic transcript six weeks after the end of the semester.

  • submit your coursework and complete assignments.

Programme fees, bursaries and scholarships

You can expect us to:

  • advise you on fees, scholarships and bursaries
  • maintain accurate records and collect the fees
  • provide a variety of options for you to pay your tuition fees.

We will expect you to:

  • make any necessary arrangements with anyone who is financing your programme of study and pay your fees as agreed
  • tell us if your circumstances change with regard to fees.

You can expect us to:

  • provide opportunities to develop study and academic skills
  • provide a help service at each of the LISS service points
  • provide up-to-date information and resources
  • provide accessible space to study
  • provide help and guidance via a variety of media.

We expect you to:

  • produce your UoC identity card—the Cumbria Card, when requested
  • abide by rules and regulations, intellectual property, copyright and patent laws
  • return borrowed resources on time (Opening hours are those appropriate to the needs for each campus).

  • treat your application in confidence
  • distribute student support funds fairly and appropriately.

  • provide careers information, advice, and guidance and job vacancies

You can expect us to:

  • advise you regarding services, financial support, assistive technology and equipment.

Counselling, health and wellbeing

You can expect us to:

  • provide a professional counselling service.

We expect you to:

  • register with a local National Health Service General Practitioner (GP)
  • keep appointments and follow up on advice that you are given.

Information Technology Services (ITS)

You can expect us to:

  • provide a network account and storage for your work
  • provide computer labs and/or loan laptops with access to the internet and software that you may need for your studies
  • provide access to technical support through our Service Desk
  • provide help, advice and training on how to use the ITS facilities.

We expect you to:

  • abide by our user code of practice and security policy.
  • treat the ITS and media equipment with care and respect
  • return all loaned equipment on time, complete and in working order.

International students

Additionally you can expect us to:

  • inform you of what you need and should expect in order to study at UoC
  • specify the level of English language fluency you require
  • provide information and guidance about visa applications
  • arrange a pick-up service from local airports, train or bus stations
  • offer a dedicated induction programme on your arrival
  • monitor your university attendance, and any absence.

We will expect you to:

  • comply with UK Immigration Rules
  • provide evidence of English language and academic qualifications
  • comply with university regulations on the payment of fees
  • register with the National Health Service
  • comply with requests for information on your attendance
  • tell us of changes in your personal circumstances.

If you are an Exchange or Study Abroad student

  • Students coming for semester 1 (September–January) only, will be housed in temporary accommodation until suitable accommodation can be found or a space in halls becomes available.
  • Students coming for semester 2 (January–June) only need to find accommodation in advance of arriving in the UK, and may need temporary accommodation until alternate accommodation is found.
  • All other international students see Accommodation Services below.

Accommodation services

You can expect us to:

  • provide information on our website, and at our Accommodation Offices
  • be available Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 17.00
  • advise you of accommodation arrangements
  • provide halls of residence which are secure and supportive
  • provide information on private sector accommodation
  • give priority for rooms in halls to new international students, new first year students from outside the local area, and disabled students
  • guarantee accommodation in halls when you have accepted a place in halls, and supply your contract.

Note: Exchange or Study Abroad students are not included in the guarantee of accommodation in halls.

We expect you to:

  • meet the conditions of your license agreement
  • respect and support your environment and other resident

You can expect us to:

  • have catering services open at all core business times of the day
  • provide freshly cooked food, varied menus at value for money prices
  • cater for most special diets, as requested.

  • respect other users and the staff in catering outlets.

  • identify and provide sport and recreation activities which are of interest
  • provide information on recreation and sports facilities in the local area.

The Students’ Union is our recognised representative organisation for students.

We encourage all students to become active members and are proud of our continuing and effective partnership with the Students’ Union. You may opt out by writing to the Students’ Union.

Every registered student automatically gains membership to the Students' Union.

The Students' Union is led by elected officials, is a charitable organisation and is independent of our university.
