Counselling and therapy

Something bothering you? Worried about a friend?

Coming to university is a big step in anyone's life and sometimes things won't go to plan. Counselling can give you time to explore what is going on in your life in a safe setting. You will be listened to, respected and not judged. You can explore ways to help yourself, do things differently, be clearer about things and move on.

Our counselling and therapy service is staffed by qualified and trainee Counsellors, CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) Therapists, and Mental Health Advisers.Student Support

Change and transition can throw all our familiar coping mechanisms into disarray. Tasks that used to be easy in known surroundings can seem like a huge mountain to climb. Having to cope with daily mundane tasks such as eating, drinking, laundry, shopping and other ‘housekeeping tasks’ as well as attending lectures, sorting out your finances, keeping in contact with family, old friends as well as make new ones may leave you feeling totally confused. Common reasons why students attend our confidential sessions include low mood, academic stress and relationship problems.

You can either attend a group session or workshop or attend a drop-in session. (Penrith students only - book an appointment via email.)

You may also find this list of self-help books useful.

Drop-in sessions

If you wish to see someone for support regarding emotional and/or psychological issues, we now run regular drop-in sessions for pre-therapy assessment. A 10 minute assessment will be undertaken between yourself and a therapist to determine which intervention would be required. There's no need to book, just turn up.

You will be seen by one of our qualified members of staff on a one-to-one basis. After your pre-therapy assessment you will be offered an appointment with either a Counsellor, a CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) Therapist or a Mental Health Adviser, or you may be referred on to another staff member (depending on your need).
