University of Cumbria Hosts Third Annual Social Work Conference

University of Cumbria Hosts Third Annual Social Work Conference name

On Friday 17th May 2019 the University of Cumbria will hold its third annual Social Work Conference. The two previous Conferences have featured influential figure from the world of Social Work and this year is no exception. One of the keynote speakers is Andrew Turnell, a world renowned independent social worker, brief therapist and child protection consultant who was recently appointed as a Professor of Practice at University of Cumbria. He is responsible for Signs of Safety, an internationally used risk assessment model for use in child protection social work. The model is currently being adopted in Cumbria County Council, Dumfries and Galloway Council and other neighbouring local authorities. Andrew’s  appearance at the Conference will coincide with other work which he will do with the social work teaching team and local social work practitioners. The other keynote speaker is Iona Colvin, the Chief Social Work Adviser for the Scottish Government.

The Social Work Conference will also include presentations by social work students and other related programmes talking about their dissertation research. The conference reflects  the Social Work team’s commitment to creating a research culture both within the student body and within the professional social work community in the region. The University encourages alumni to both attend and contribute to the conference.  A web page on the University site will soon go active with information about how to register with the conference. Any alumni who would like to become involved in presenting at the conference or discussing how the University can support them in doing research or professional development should contact kirsteen.laidlaw@cumbria.ac.uk
