"Why do we always get the blame for everything we do?"
Dennis the Menace (and Gnasher)

Well, the following graduates are going to "get the blame for everything they've done" and, in true Beano style, they deserve a slap-up feed and civic reception at the Town Hall PLUS a large bag of gobstoppers.

2011 Computer Arts Graduate Showcase

Left: Amy Holliday on holiday

We're just so proud of Amy Holliday. She earned the 'Illustration Excellence Award' from Computer Arts this year.
Here's why...

"I awarded the Excellence Award to Amy because the enthusiasm in her work is evident. Her illustrations speak to a spirit that shines with the voice of its author. Amy also handles her medium with a lightness that suits the subject matter beautifully, and lends to it a quality of emotion that displays an empathy with her subject. Her illustrations are exquisite, very confident and defined with a fully realised personal style."
Autumn Whitehurst, Competition Judge

2011 Tigerprint "Gifted?" Competition: Winner!
We always expected great things from Emma Slights (centre forward in our studio soccer dream team) and she hasn't disappointed us, being picked from thousands of entries as the winner of TigerPrint's Gifted? competition as the overall winner.
Emma will join Tigerprint from a period of internship but watch out from her cards, etc. which will be in store for Christmas 2012. Goal!

2011 Letts Diary Competition: Winner!
Petra Blahova's Letts Diaries

Petra Blahova (top right) did us proud with her Letts Diary competition entry - she beat off stiff competition to bring home a win for the University. You can't get better than that!
Petra's designs were derived from her growing personal interest in pattern and typography, a direction she has developed throughout her second year on the Graphic Design course. As part of her prize she joined the Letts team in Edinburgh for some useful work experience and picked up an equally useful £1000! Look out for Petra's diaries in a shop near you... and buy one.

BA Graphics graduate, Rhona Mowat, now employed at One O'Clock Gun won both the 'Chairman's Award' and the 'Best Poster' in the Scottish Design Awards 2008

The first edition 'Bagatelle' Comic Book Tales, features a raft of well known and not so well known comic book artists. It also includes contributions from BA Graphics students: Ruth Cheong, Rob Moxon and Dan Tucker.

Rob Moxon and Dan Tucker also produced a limited edition poster for a visit to the University, from Harry Pearce of Pentagram www.pentagram.com, arguably the world's most prestigious design company, a multi-disciplinary worldwide firm.

The second issue of Pinhole Camera: 2 featuring the work of the BA (Hons) Creative Writing students with design and typographic imaging by BA Graphics student Johanna Sodergren. This must have been well received because BA Graphics student, Annabel Street, subsequently designed the third issue, Pinhole Camera: 3

Rick Banks (the 1st) recently secured a deal with Magma Books to publish his Type Trumps produced as part of his graduate show in 2007, as were his posters, currently available through www.blanka.co.uk

For the fourth year running we had the most students - Arlene Graham, Johannes Schaefer, Gary Austin, Benjamin Datmo, Rob Moxon and Dan Tucker - featured in the Graphic Design/Illustration section of the Computer Arts Graduate Showcase.

Steven Heller's 'Icons of Graphic Design' (2008 Thames & Hudson) "presents a unique history of design, documenting over a century of creative brilliance. Showcasing the most influential designs and designers from 1900 to the present". It features everyone from Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Alexander Rodchenko, L. Lissitzky, Kurt Schwitters, Saul Bass, Neville Brody, David Carson, Stefan Sagmeister and naturally our very own Sarah France on page 221. At 24, Sarah (and now officially an icon!) was surely the youngest contender to be featured in this book.

Oh yes, we've also seen Stefan Sagmeister's autograph, but we can't tell you where!
