Biography

I joined the University of Cumbria in 2013, and since then I have gained a PGCE in Higher Education and had experience teaching across a range of subjects on Social Work, Older Adults and Mental Health programmes.

In addition to Lecturing I acted as Programme Lead for the MA/PgDip Mental Health Practice (which incorporates both Approved Mental Health Professional and Best Interest Assessor qualifying awards) for three years. My current role is Placement Lead for the BA and MA Social Work, and in addition to this I lead and teach on modules involving Student Placements, Academic Skills and applying theory into Social Work Practice. Additional duties include Link Lecturer, Personal Tutor, Dissertation supervision for both BA and MA, Interviewing, and Practice Education.

I have been a registered Social Worker since 2004, and I have 9 years experience working as a Social Worker in a statutory adults team where I gained experience in working with adults including statutory assessment, support planning, risk assessment, funding applications, safeguarding and end of life care.

During my time in Statutory Social Work I was also involved in various projects including the creation of a statutory funded support group for disabled adults in Carlisle, and the development of an interagency meetings to foster shared learning and development of services in the local area. I also acted as Practice Assessor to Social Work students, as a Liaison for a neuro-rehabilitation ward in acute hospital, then later assigned as a Social Worker to a GP practice. I have gained extensive experience in working with adults including statutory assessment, support planning, risk assessment, funding applications, safeguarding and end of life care.

Prior to qualifying as a Social Worker I worked as an NVQ and Modern Apprenticeship Trainer and Assessor on various youth schemes for 10 years.
