Fake News & Meme Wars: Navigating Harmful Narratives with Young People

Presenter: Nathan Erskine

At no point in history have we been exposed to as much information as we are today. We access it from ever-changing streams which – as we are learning – are open to corruption and bias. Young People are at increased risk of these harmful practices and will often rely on practitioners around them to guide them through the maze of disinformation and conflicting agendas.

This seminar will discuss the starting point in this practice; that is the need for professionals to arm themselves with trustworthy sources of information as well as engaging with a wide variety of data – even if they disagree with the content. We will investigate the forms in which ‘Fake News’ can take on; how it can be particularly targeted at younger people and look at methods for challenging it alongside young people. Finally, we will consider concerns of political bias creeping into these supportive narratives; how we can safeguard against this and counter accusations from potential detractors of this practice.
