Careers in Mental Health

Mental Health awareness has grown exponentially over the last few years and has become a regular part of our lives. While for many it has been an ongoing part of their lives for years, perhaps even decade, for others it is relatively new. In particular, due to increased stress and significant changes to their working or home environment throughout the pandemic, people have had to learn how to deal with stress, isolation, grief, low mood and anxiety.

But what can we do as a nation to support mental health and wellbeing? With a projected need of up to 10 million people requiring support following the pandemic1, almost 20% of the population, professionals and experts will be needed in increased numbers over the next decade.

With over 350 professions in the NHS, and countless more across other sectors, we have never been more in need of experts to support our nation’s mental health and wellbeing.

Join us in our session to explore the variety of careers available to you in Mental Health, Wellbeing and support services. We will delve into what makes an excellent mental health professional, identify the services in need and explore your journey towards a rewarding career.

We will also be joined in the second half of the session by academics, students and professionals to discuss how they each play their part in the development of mental health services in the UK.

Our Virtual Outreach

During the unprecedented times of social distancing, our team remain on hand to support you. Over the coming weeks, we are ensuring there is something for everyone, whether you’re a future student, teacher or adviser. We’ve got you.

All our virtual outreach activities on offer have been developed to inform and motivate participants, and link to the Gatsby Benchmarks for Good Career Guidance. This report was redefined and published in January 2018. Laying out eight benchmarks, the report outlined good practice within careers guidance and an expectation that all secondary schools have a careers plan.

To see what else we're offering online, head on over to www.cumbria.ac.uk/webinars for the rest of our virtual outreach delivery.

If you are a teacher or tutor and would like for your whole class to get involved, drop us an email at outreach@cumbria.ac.uk and we'll see how we can help you. Bespoke events may be possible for schools and colleges, at times that suit you, dependent on academic availability.
