Undergraduate Awards Highly Commended

Charlotte Swale gained a first class degree for her criminology and law course this year. After a suggestion from a friend she submitted her coursework to the Undergraduate Awards, an international student competition. Her paper received a highly commended in the social science category meaning that it is ranked in the top 10% of all undergraduate academic work globally.

Simon's mission to Papua New Guinea

It started even while in college. Simon Potinu would send part of his school allowance money home to buy blankets for elderly people living in the rural, mountainous village in Papua New Guinea where he had grown up. Caring for the aging is something Simon feels should be done, in practical ways, while the elderly are still around to feel its effects. The blanket project has grown from those college days to now supplying over 70 blankets to those in critical need.

From student to staff with Karishma Asher

Karishma Asher, or Kish as she prefers to be known, graduated from the University of Cumbria in 2017 with a 1st class BA Hons English degree. During her time as a student she was also the student lead for the English Society, a very successful student group. Kish has decided to stay on at the university but this time as a member of staff, working for the Students’ Union.

This April a STEM employers event was held on campus in Carlisle by the Careers and Employability Service. This afternoon event was aimed at current students and University of Cumbria alumni. We had a range of fantastic speakers including Fran Ward from C-STEM, Lucy Dunn from the Lake District Wildlife Park and Libby Shaw from the Careers and Employability Service.

The University has recently introduced a range of Higher and Degree Level Apprenticeships, ranging from Nursing, Healthcare Science, Policing, and Leadership & Management. Degree Apprenticeships are real degrees but delivered flexibly alongside you job. Building on our successful launch of the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, the University of Cumbria is developing an apprenticeship programme to support talent development, through the Senior Leaders Master's Degree.

Jim Garbett 1931 - 2018

George James Garbett, usually known as "Jim", was born in the Black Country ( a fact that he prized) but was evacuated during the war to Blackpool where he attended Blackpool Grammar School. He did National Service in the Navy, trained as a mechanic, but never went to sea - except on a full rigged training ship ! In later life his Naval training came in useful for his ingenious household d.i.y.projects.

David was one of the second cohort of staff to St. Martins, joining the English Department. David was educated at Loughborough Grammar School before going to Liverpool University where he was awarded a First Class Honours Degree in English. He followed this with a PGCE and then taught for several years.

On Saturday 28th July in Ambleside, Cumbria after weeks and weeks of unbroken sunshine, during one of the hottest summers in decades, it rained, it rained rather a lot. But there was one small group of alumni who didn’t notice one drop, the weather was not going to dampen their spirits as they all met up for the first time in 35 years.

Back in February 2018 Marion Heys (Nee Carter) got in touch with Joanne Lusher the University of Cumbria alumni relations officer to explain that the summer of 2018 marks 50 years of friendship between herself and five friends who all lived together on campus at Charlotte Mason College from 1968 to 1971. The group of close friends lived in Ashfield and Heathfield, along with Beechfield and Hazeldene make up the terrace of traditional Lakeland cottages right in the heart of our campus in Amblesi

Research and its role in our discipline and department is something that we discuss with our undergraduate psychology students from their very first day on the course. The psychology staff team are all research active and have either achieved PhD’s or are working towards them. We are extremely proud of the research culture we have created in our department. Recent graduates, Ryan Hutchinson (first class honours: digital arts in game level design) and Anna Lynch (pass with distinction: MA creative practice) have taken their interest and passion for video game design and used it to co-found Black Rat Studio, an indie game development studio based in Carlisle.
