Award-winning Hazel draws on her success
There was cause for a triple celebration for award winning illustration student Hazel Mason.
Hazel, a third year BA (Hons) Illustration student, not graduated from the University of Cumbria (November 28) she was awarded the Derwent prize for excellence along with a second award for academic excellence.
The 21 year old from Stoke-on-Trent was rewarded for the excellence of her illustrations.
These include the Lakes International Comic Festival 'Spirit of the Lakes' competition as well as the Colour in Design award, New Designers graduate showcase for her amazingly vivid, production of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.
The crowd-funded illustrated book captured the attention several executives who offered her subsequent professional freelance work.
Hazel said: “Everything I’ve expected has been really rewarding from tutor contact which has been fantastic to building friendships with people who’ll be friends for life.”
It is for this reason Hazel’s illustration lecturer Dwayne Bell recognised her for her exceptional talents.
Dwayne said: “The force of nature that is Hazel Mason, swept through the illustration studio, leaving a notable record of achievement in her wake!”
He added: “Hazel was never anything but fully committed to illustration and worked at a professional level for most of her final year, which saw her impress industry partners, successfully crowd fund her first illustrated book and be the source of much interest at London's New Designers graduate showcase.
“Big of smile and loud of voice, Hazel was always fun to work with and a pleasure to teach. We can't wait to see what she does next.”
After graduating, Hazel will continue freelance work and will take up a placement with Hallmark Cards next year. She aims to expand her portfolio and experience with further freelance contracts.
