The University of Cumbria has a lot to celebrate next week. In excess of 1,100 students will be receiving their degrees and awards in Carlisle Cathedral throughout three days of ceremonies in front of families, friends and guests, and a final ceremony on Thursday afternoon will witness the inauguration of the new Vice Chancellor, Professor Julie Mennell.
The students’ achievements cover a wide range of subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level and the ceremonies give them the opportunity to enjoy their academic success in the presence of those who have supported them throughout the long years of study.
Three ceremonies will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, and two on Thursday, and on each occasion there will be a formal procession into the Cathedral with staff and graduates in academic robes. Celebratory receptions will take place at the Crown & Mitre Hotel immediately after each ceremony.
At the same time, the university will honour those who have been nominated to receive the award of Honorary Fellow. Honorary fellowships are awarded in recognition of individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the university and in support of a variety of causes linked to the work of the university, and at the ceremonies next week two honorary fellowships will be presented to Christopher Terry (posthumous award) and Stephen Cox.
And to round off this very special week, Professor Mennell will be confirmed in her role as Vice Chancellor of the University of Cumbria at a formal inauguration ceremony, again in the Cathedral. Professor Mennell took up her role at the beginning of August in succession to Professor Peter Strike, who retired from the university. Professor Mennell has forged a distinguished academic career at a number of universities in the north of England, and brings to the Cumbrian institution a great deal of insight and expertise.
University of Cumbria Chancellor, The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu will attend the final two graduation ceremonies on Thursday and will preside at the Vice Chancellor’s inauguration ceremony in the afternoon.
