A member of the university’s HR team who has led the move towards improving the health and wellbeing of staff and supporting Lancaster-based St John’s Hospice charity has received her MBE.

Denise Mace says she was “extremely grateful and incredibly humbled” to be recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to higher education and the community in North Lancashire.

As well as working for the university Denise became a director of the Shops Board at St John’s Hospice when she joined the charity four years ago.

She received her MBE from Prince William who she said asked about the university and the hospice and showed concern about last year’s floods adding: “Afterwards we were escorted to the courtyard for official photos and we were stood next to Alan Shearer and his family – another highlight.”
