Exchange of business incubation knowledge between Spain and Cumbria
Staff from the University of Cumbria’s enterprise and business development team have been hosting a knowledge exchange visit with Professor Alvaro Simon de Blas from the University of Malaga in Spain.
Alvaro, an economist and an expert in business incubation and past president of Eurobics, a European wide network of around 250 business incubation centres, has been promoting better understanding of best practice in business support and the incubation of start-up companies.
During his residency Alvaro has met with a number key staff at the university including Professor Frank Peck (research director, Centre for Regional Economic Development), Pro Vice Chancellor Enterprise, Business Development & Engagement, Sandra Booth and Ewan Pullan, who is an employment engagement manager at the Carlisle Business Interaction Centre in Paternoster Row.
Professor Peck said: “This visit has provided an excellent opportunity for us to share research ideas on regional economic change across Europe and the role of business innovation centres in stimulating new firm formation.
“In the 1990s, I conducted research on the role of the Andalucia Technology Park in Malaga where Alvaro is based. It has been very interesting to hear first-hand how the park has evolved since that time.
“There are good prospects for future collaboration in research on economic development between our institutions.”
