Green Minds think alike
A project to encourage students and staff at the Lancaster campus of the University of Cumbria to use gardening as a way of encouraging exercise and wellbeing is underway.
Green Minds is an initiative which also aims to give areas of the campus a spring clean and make-over.
"The Green Minds group have transformed an area by the university chapel,” Mark Christie, senior lecturer in sport and physical activity, said. “In just forty minutes the group came together with plenty of chat, swapping gardening tips and exercise in the beautiful sunshine. Several got their heart rate up to the moderate intensity zone which benefits cardiovascular health!"
The scheme is also the subject of an exercise project which will track the benefits of the initiative.
"I am really looking forward to researching the Green Minds project in respect of physical, mental and social health benefits, " said sports science student Louise Hulse."We hope more staff and students will get involved in due course. Just being involved demonstrated how inspiring this mode of physical activity can be in motivating people of all ages to get exercising "
