Prize winners score hat-trick celebrating university’s tenth birthday
Three lucky football spectators got more than they bargained for when they turned up to watch a football match recently. They were selected at random to win three amazing prizes all in celebration of the University of Cumbria’s tenth birthday.
The prize draw was part of an exclusive offer to university staff, students, alumni and partners to watch the Carlisle United versus Morecambe FC game at Brunton Park in November at a discounted rate. Purchasers of the reduced-rate tickets were entered into a prize-draw and the winners were selected at random.
Winners of the first prize - a £500 voucher for a holiday cottage from lakelovers.co.uk - were university employee, Susan Weisser, and her husband, Roy.
“Roy and I were amazed and delighted when we heard we had won first prize. Our family are all 'lake-lovers' and we visit often but to have the opportunity to stay in the heart of the lakes and go walking is just a dream come true” she said.
Second prize of a signed Carlisle United football shirt went to university Portfolio and Programme Development Manager, Toby Best. “I am delighted to win this shirt which provides a special memento of the game which my son and I attended at Brunton Park. It will take pride of place on his bedroom wall”, he said.
Andrea McAllister, Head of Sixth Form at Workington Academy, was the winner of the third prize - a framed Carlisle United statistical wall chart. “My son is very excited to win the wall planner. He is a big Carlisle United supporter!” she said.
The university sponsored the local derby match between Carlisle United and Lancaster FC in November as one of a number of events to celebrate its tenth birthday.
“The university has a foot in the counties of Cumbria and Lancashire, and so the football match provided the perfect opportunity to give back to our staff, students, alumni and partners who have helped to make the university what is it today” said, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Patricia Livsey.
All prizes were generously donated by university partners. In another link to the university, the statistical wall chart was designed by former member of staff, Simon Schofield, and is available to buy in the CUFC shop.
