Spotlight shines on blue-light and health at careers event
Ever fancied a career in the police, being a paramedic or a nurse but don’t know what’s involved or how to go about it? Then look no further, as the annual health care and blue light careers event takes place next week at the University of Cumbria, Fusehill Street, Carlisle to help young people in north Cumbria make informed decisions about their future.
The event, now in its third year, sees health and care professionals, emergency services and education providers come together under one roof to showcase the range of careers on offer and training routes into them.
Students from year 11 and above across school, further education and higher education will be able to ask professionals and educators questions, try out equipment and practical tasks, and attend workshops to find out more about a wide range of careers.
Victoria McDade, Resourcing and Attraction Manager at Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, said:
“It’s so important that young people can access high quality careers information and this event brings everyone together under one roof to do just that. It’s an opportunity for those with a clear idea about their career to talk to professionals about next steps and for those who don’t know what they want to do to find out more about their options.
“It has been fantastic to watch this event grow each year with more organisation and schools joining. The feedback we’ve had has been really positive and we’ve used this to keep improving.”
This is the second year that the event will be held at the University of Cumbria’s Carlisle campus. Louise Nelson, Head of Nursing, Health and Professional Practice said:
“We’re excited to be hosting this event again and working together with so many different organisations. Finding out about different careers is one thing but being able to talk to education providers at the same time is invaluable. Cumbria has some fantastic opportunities and by working together we can give our young people the best support to explore their future options.”
Schools and colleges have been invited to attend during school hours and have already secured places for more than 350 students. From 3.15pm the event is open to the public and young people are encouraged to come along, on their own or with parents or carers.
The health care and blue light careers event takes place on 18 September, 10:30–16:30 in the Sports Centre, University of Cumbria, Fusehill Street, Carlisle CA1 2HH.
