Students at the University of Cumbria have developed new social media accounts for one of the university’s departments.

The Lancaster-based medical sciences team now have thriving Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts set up as part of the international business management course.

“We launched the idea and have provided training for key staff so they can now continue the work to build their profile and share content among students, staff and peers all over the world,” student Helen Salmon said. “Over the last 5 months, 6 of my fellow 3rd year business students and I have set up and run the Medical Sciences Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles, found some of their potential audiences for marketing their courses, maintained the pages with content and have now handed over the project to the department.”

A consultancy project is undertaken by students to offer real life experience of a business transaction. Previous projects have ranged from carrying out audience research for Lancaster-based community radio station Beyond Radio to devising a marketing campaign for Feather and Spring bed manufacturers, also based in the city.

“This kind of work offers real work experience for students and we’re delighted to be able to form such collaborations with businesses in north Lancashire and beyond,” Dr Raye Ng, principal lecturer in business and international development, added.
