Students star in double decker roadshow

Students from the University of Cumbria are sacrificing their summer breaks to take to the road in a double decker bus, ‘Summer Holiday’ style.

The university, the only one to have a campus in a UNESCO world heritage site, has acquired a distinctive yellow and blue double decker that will criss-cross the north of England and Northern Ireland offering visitors an insight into life at Cumbria.

Film and media, occupational therapy, teaching and sport students will be among those staffing the bus over the next four weeks as it calls in at destinations from Belfast to Blackpool to Manchester to Morecambe.

“I just wanted to join the others in giving something back,” BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS student Paul Lawlor said. ”As a recent graduate from the University of Cumbria, I am fully aware and have recent experience of the vast array of bespoke educational opportunities available here. I can’t wait to get on the road to meet prospective students to talk about my own personal journey.”

Paul graduated two weeks ago but has signed up to promote one of the most improved universities in the UK*

The Belfast born primary school teacher is joining a team who are looking forward to meeting potential students in the run up to the crucial A level results day.

“We don’t rely on people coming to us for conventional open days – we’d rather get out and go to them!” Jade Thomson, senior marketing officer, said. “Whether you’re looking to come to uni this year or in the future, it’ll be a fun, interactive way of getting to see what’s on offer as well as a chance to hear from some of our students, past and present.”

Also joining the team will be Zoe Butler, the award-winning nurse who graduated last year and now works for the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust.

Capturing the tour will be a team of former students (see below) who set up their own media company after graduating. Thrown Overboard Media Co Ltd (or TOMCo. for short), have a track record in producing impressive media content for use by a wide range of clients through conventional and social media. They will be offering to pass on tricks of their trade while also explaining how they studied and now enjoy a successful career following their time at the University of Cumbria.

“Moving 200 miles to come to Cumbria opened up a whole new world of opportunities,” Alex, originally from Warwickshire, said. “What’s better than studying within this glorious part of the world with the Lake District on your doorstep? I’ve always been passionate about filmmaking and photography, and the course I took at the university really inspired me to do the best that I can - and now I coordinate the company’s creative productions to compose professional content for clients. I can’t wait to get on the road!”

The former students will produce a video diary of the tour and will make use of state of the art equipment to film each location from an unusual angle, all shared via the website and through social media using the hashtag #theresaplaceforyou

“The university is known for innovation and development of new and exciting courses which benefit to people and places all over the UK and beyond,” David Chesser, the university’s chief operating officer, said. “This is the first time we’ve been on tour I’m delighted potential new students will get to hear first hand accounts of what life at the University of Cumbria is like from our own existing and former students.”
