Major changes to the way apprenticeships are structured and funded has prompted the University of Cumbria to appoint a new member of staff to build closer links with employers.
Peter Train has just joined the university as apprenticeship development manager, a role which will enable Cumbrian businesses to make the most of the opportunities offered by the new higher level and degree apprenticeship schemes.
Previously the head of learning and development at Cumbria Police, Peter originally developed partnership working with the University from an employers’ perspective and is a keen advocate of apprentices after seeing for himself what difference such opportunities can offer to individuals and businesses.
“The university is keen to engage with employers across Cumbria and staff here are looking for new opportunities to share our existing expertise in areas such as management, health and teaching more widely,” Peter said. “These are really good opportunities for local business, not just in taking on new employees but also by allowing companies to develop the skills of existing employees to improve their business.”
A keen fell walker and fan of the county (“I came here in 1982 for two weeks and never went home!”) Peter’s looking forward to spending time meeting and speaking with employers across the county to identify areas where collaboration with the university could help develop their business.
