University of Cumbria celebrates community links with festive evening of entertainment
A free festive evening is poised to showcase the talents of students and staff from the University of Cumbria and celebrate the institution’s community links with the city of Carlisle.
The University of Cumbria is holding its first Christmas Celebration at Carlisle Cathedral on Monday 10 December 2018.
The event will include exclusive performances from students from the university’s Institute of the Arts, including female acapella group Voces UoC, as well as academics from the Brampton Road campus.
Cumbria’s High Sheriff Simon Berry; the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Jessica Riddle; and the Mayor of Allerdale, Cllr John Crouch, are among those attending. University Vice Chancellor Professor Julie Mennell and the Dean of Carlisle, the Very Revd Mark Boyling, will warmly welcome guests.
Professor Mennell said: “It is the end of what has been a busy and successful year for the University of Cumbria.
“This is a fantastic way of celebrating our achievements as well as recognising the support we have received from our partners and communities here in Carlisle, who we would like to thank.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone to the evening at the cathedral, a wonderful location which warmly welcomes us for our graduations every year for what will be fitting celebration of Christmas and the talent of our students and staff.”
Professor Graeme Danby, Professor of Practice at the Institute of the Arts and musical director for the evening, said: “This event showcases performing arts students from our Brampton Road campus in a venue that we as a university have a close association with.
“The University of Cumbria Christmas Celebration gives the public a chance to engage with our students and will give them a chance to meet them afterwards and say hello.
“It also gives our students a chance to promote themselves to the people of Carlisle in one of the city’s most iconic and special landmarks. We hope that people will come to the cathedral and then hopefully go on to support their forthcoming productions that run throughout the year at the Stanwix Theatre.”
A retiring collection will be taken in aid of Eden Valley Hospice and the Carlisle Cathedral Development Trust.
Carlisle Cathedral hosts the university’s graduation ceremonies every July and November.
Tickets for Monday's Christmas Celebration, which starts at 7pm, are free and available from the receptions at the university’s Brampton Road and Fusehill Street campuses. Alternatively, tickets can be reserved for collection on the night by emailing email@example.com.
