University of Cumbria shines at Sci-Tech Daresbury
Steve Wood, Business Develoment Manager, and Fiona Boyle, Employability Manager, recently represented the university at Sci-Tech Daresbury's NW University Fair.
The work that the university has been undertaking in supporting businesses in Cumbria has recently been highlighted at the prestigious NW University Fair held at Sci-Tech Daresbury in Cheshire. Sci-Tech Daresbury is one of the UK’s national science and innovation campuses, and a strategic Enterprise Zone.
The event is a rare opportunity for regional businesses to meet and engage with all North West Universities in one place.
The aim of the event is for businesses to establish relationships with the regional universities who are key partners in bringing support and expertise to companies in areas such as:
- Student projects & placements
- Student recruitment
- Collaborative research & Knowledge Transfer Partnerships
- Access to facilities
In a Q&A session designed to demonstrate best practice around student placements, the University of Cumbria’s relationship with James Cropper Plc was highlighted as an outstanding example of the success of a year in industry student, and the impact both professionally and personally they have made in the business.
Peter Scott, Technical & Quality Director represented James Cropper, and Fiona Boyle, Employability Manager represented UoC. Peter described how Fiona had got to know and understand the business, introduced him to academic colleagues and ultimately sourced an excellent candidate. Key to the success was the relationship built by Peter and Fiona.
Lancaster-based Development Manager Steve Wood also attended and added “This is a great example of how a university and a business can work together and build their relationship to cover other areas such as degree and high level apprenticeships.”
