Triple celebration for Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year 2017

To have one reason to celebrate is normally enough to savour but Fine Art graduate Emily Hartness and her family have enjoyed marking three! As well as graduating from the University of Cumbria and collecting the first Institute of the Arts award for creativity and innovation, the 22 year-old from Carlisle has also been named Young Cumbria Artist of the Year.

Lecturer creates unique Brexit picture and audio archive

One year after the UK triggered its withdrawal from the EU, a unique sound and picture archive has been created by a university lecturer who toured the country canvassing the views of voters. Alice Myers, lecturer of photography at the University of Cumbria, and artist Ali Avery embarked on a two-week tour of the UK last April to listen and record the views of everyday voters. They stopped at 50-mile intervals and knocked on every number 50 door they could find, documenting their journey.

The chance to work with professionals from the film industry recently led to an outstanding experience for a group of film and TV production students from the University of Cumbria.The newly-released version of ‘Peter Rabbit’ was filmed at a number of locations in the north of England, including the Lake District, and the students were employed during shooting as location marshals.

The head of the University of Cumbria’s Institute of the Arts has swopped working alongside colleagues in Carlisle for a public performance in the centre of Dundee. For the next month Roddy Hunter will be wearing a placard inviting passers by in City Square to consider the question ‘what is peace’ as part of a contemporary artwork now underway.

Photography and fine art students inspired by Langdale Valley and the Merzbarn

A wide range of images taken by photography and fine art students from the University of Cumbria who spent three days studying the contemporary landscape in the Langdale Valley have been produced. Based around Elterwater and artist Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbarn in Langdale, their project 'Land Matters’ was a site-specific residential research project providing the students with the opportunity to investigate the landscape.

There was high emotion as a University of Cumbria graduate received a standing ovation for her speech after being awarded a prestigious accolade. Katie Slavin-Trower, 27, was inaugurated as ‘alumnus of the year 2018’ at the university’s graduation ceremonies this week, for her work setting up theatre school, ‘Shining Stars ASN’ for children and adults with additional support needs.

Alchemist’s Shack to celebrate 20th anniversary

20 years after it was launched, a celebration of an artwork in the U.S. created by a fine art professor from the University of Cumbria has taken place. Mildred’s Lane is a 96-acre site set deep in the woods of rural north eastern Pennsylvania bordering Narrowsburg in New York State. Described as a ‘working-living-researching experiment centered on domesticity’ the entire site is an art complex devoted to all aspects of life in the 21st-century.

The team behind a rapidly growing independent brewery have injected their personalities into the business by literally putting themselves on their products. Jemma Ainsworth, a graphic design student at University of Cumbria, came up with the innovative designs as part of the annual Eden Student Design Project, in which it challenges students to develop the artwork for its beers.

Inclusive dance show for younger audience gains high acclaim at Edinburgh Festival

A dance show aimed at pre-school children has won a prestigious ‘Three Weeks Editors’ award’ at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Four go Wild in Wellies is a playful look at how friendships are built, broken and mended and features tents that have a life of their own, bobble hats, and lots of fun in wellies. The show was choreographed by Stevie Prickett, Senior Lecturer in Dance and Physical Theatre at the University of Cumbria.

More often used by students from the Institute of the Arts to hone their production and performance skills while studying at the University of Cumbria, Eric Robson chaired a panel of gardening experts who now offer advice on UK radio’s longest running programme.

Pudsey comes to Cumbria

The University of Cumbria in Carlisle is to play host to BBC Look North’s annual Children in Need event. The university’s Brampton Road campus will be the base for an evening of performances and celebrations on Friday 16 November, all aimed at highlighting fundraising in Cumbria and the North East in aid of the children’s charity. Last year’s telethon raised £60.7m and 2018 will be hoping to go even higher.

The University of Cumbria’s arts campus was beamed live to viewers across the north east and Cumbria on BBC 1 after being transformed into the main regional venue for this year’s BBC Children in Need programme (Friday 16 November.) Around 50 students from the campus were involved on and off screen to support the event with more due to enjoy work experience with the BBC in the future.

A group of three friends who all studied together and went on to set up a multi-media company have celebrated graduating and receiving an award in recognition of their entrepreneurship. Emily Dodd studied Wildlife Media and along with Adventure Media student Alex Fowkes and Sam Burton who studied Photography at the University of Cumbria’s Institute of the Arts collaborated to set themselves up in business in October 2015.

Inaugural Institute of Arts Community Engagement Prize winner Megan's 'labour of love' sees her gain commission

Her work to highlight disability by taking photographs of people with prosthetic limbs has seen photography student Megan Ogley not only graduate with a top award but be commissioned to carry on work that has become her passion. The University of Cumbria graduate from Pontefract worked with charities Steel Bones and PACE who introduced Megan to members of the prosthetics community. She encouraged them to share their stories and model for her with hundreds agreeing to take part.

There was cause for a triple celebration for award winning illustration student Hazel Mason. Hazel, a third year BA (Hons) Illustration student, not graduated from the University of Cumbria (November 28) she was awarded the Derwent prize for excellence along with a second award for academic excellence. The 21 year old from Stoke-on-Trent was rewarded for the excellence of her illustrations.

A smash hit musical has a pocket-sized star at London’s Apollo Theatre courtesy of a University of Cumbria performing arts graduate. Crowds flocking to Shaftesbury Avenue to see award-winning Everybody’s Talking About Jamie could meet-up with a celebrity doll depicting the show’s lead. The brainchild of Stee Leahy, 26, who worked his Jamie lookalike from a 16inch Barbie-type doll, the model has brought widespread acclaim and clamours for copies.

The fine art students have been awarded Venice Fellowships by the British Council. Held in one of the world’s most romantic and architecturally important cities, the Venice Biennale has a history stretching back more than 120 years and is recognised as one of the world’s most important artistic events.

A new supermarket is opening this weekend and whilst the items on the shelves will be up for sale all won’t be quite what it seems. For ‘shopkeeper’ Martin Fowler is an artist who wants his new installation ‘Supermarket’ to allow people to explore their feelings around commodities and the value placed upon them. He has spent the last two years re-creating, making and sourcing hundreds of individual items ranging from tins of beans to cans of lager to bring his exhibition to life.

Alumnus Andy appeals for help to find college compadre

Fifty years after receiving his offer letter, retired advertising executive Andy Hughes has returned to the city where he developed his artistic skills to make an appeal to find a friend. Andy, 70, from Glasgow, would like to get back in touch with Peter Bowron, who is originally from Cockermouth. They studied graphic design together at Carlisle College of Art and Design in the historic city’s Brampton Road between 1969 and 1972. It is now home to the university's Institute of the Arts.

Young artists have been taking part in the world’s biggest drawing festival thanks to support from University of Cumbria. Offering artistic and cultural opportunities to young people, the university invited secondary schools and colleges to take part in The Big Cumbria Draw competition.

‘Art provides an escape from my disability’

Yvonne Meek loves her life at the University of Cumbria. Graduating last week with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, she has already returned to study for her MA in Contemporary Fine Art. Yvonne, 24, was motivated to continue her studies after completing her BA despite facing a number of health challenges. Yvonne is delighted to graduate and feels especially proud of her achievement.

At the age of 21, entrepreneur Laura Devaney is getting ahead in business thanks to her arts degree – gained 30 years after her mother completed her studies at the same campus. Laura runs two new businesses with her partner Cameron Martin, who is also a member of the University of Cumbria’s alumni association, giving the night-time economy in Carlisle a welcome boost.

Students capture wildlife wonders for 2021 calendar 

Aspiring wildlife photographers and filmmakers have pooled their talents to create a 2021 calendar.  University of Cumbria’s Wildlife Society has selected 13 stunning images of nature for its calendar. Showing a diversity of animal, bird, insect and plant life, the collection features coastal birds such as the Sandpiper, forest and woodland’s Tawny Owls, the nocturnal badger and, shining a light on the importance of invertebrates, the role of bees and moths in pollination.

Tony presented the issues as he delivered a guest lecture, part of a series of talks organised by the Arts Research Initiative, for University of Cumbria Institute of the Arts staff and students. A selection of his art, material and documents is also on display at the university's creative Carlisle campus.

People Land Art Culture and Ecology (PLACE) is bridging with the university's Centre for National Parks and Protected Areas and linking artists with those who work in and on celebrated but often fragile landscapes. Amid pressing concerns over climate change, habitat declines and post Brexit farming, an ambitious five-year mission aims to be a catalyst for shifting dynamics. The PLACE Collective is inspired by the Lake District’s World Heritage success in celebrating cultural heritage.

Cumbria launches new website showcasing talents of more than 120 artists 

2020Vision is a virtual gallery giving University of Cumbria arts graduates a clear platform to show off their skills developed over the last three years. The university’s Brampton Road campus in Carlisle - a creative arts campus for 70 years - is usually transformed each summer by its talented students completing an array of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.  Coronavirus lockdown restrictions mean that this year's celebration has moved online for the first time.

Photographer gains degree with his autobiographical picture portrayal of life with a disability

Photography graduate Jordan Mossom has praised University of Cumbria for supporting him to study for and gain a degree while living with a rare muscle-wasting condition. Growing up with a passion for photography, Jordan did not think university would be an option open to him. He's now a proud member of University of Cumbria’s Class of 2020, successfully completing his degree this summer and seeing his work recognised by an international photography magazine.
