Film industry opportunity for University of Cumbria students

The chance to work with professionals from the film industry recently led to an outstanding experience for a group of film and TV production students from the University of Cumbria.The newly-released version of ‘Peter Rabbit’ was filmed at a number of locations in the north of England, including the Lake District, and the students were employed during shooting as location marshals.

New report confirms Cumbria equips students for future success

A national survey shows 97% of all graduates from the University of Cumbria are in employment within six months of graduating, and of those, 82% are in professional level jobs or study. The figures come from ‘The Destination of Leavers from Higher Education’ (DLHE) survey which collects information recording higher education (HE) students are doing six months after qualification.

Outstanding response to university 1000-mile bus tour

Students from the University of Cumbria will be over 450 miles into a 1000-mile tour of Northern England and Ireland by the end of this week, helping people to find their place at university. So far, students have taken over 450 enquiries from people looking to start university this year or next. Students have spoken to people from such far off places as Colombia and one individual is known to have travelled 105 miles from his home in Dublin to visit the bus in Belfast just to get some advice.

Inclusive dance show for younger audience gains high acclaim at Edinburgh Festival

A dance show aimed at pre-school children has won a prestigious ‘Three Weeks Editors’ award’ at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Four go Wild in Wellies is a playful look at how friendships are built, broken and mended and features tents that have a life of their own, bobble hats, and lots of fun in wellies. The show was choreographed by Stevie Prickett, Senior Lecturer in Dance and Physical Theatre at the University of Cumbria.

A smash hit musical has a pocket-sized star at London’s Apollo Theatre courtesy of a University of Cumbria performing arts graduate. Crowds flocking to Shaftesbury Avenue to see award-winning Everybody’s Talking About Jamie could meet-up with a celebrity doll depicting the show’s lead. The brainchild of Stee Leahy, 26, who worked his Jamie lookalike from a 16inch Barbie-type doll, the model has brought widespread acclaim and clamours for copies.

Up to 4,000 people will flock to Carlisle Cathedral next week for the University of Cumbria’s 2019 summer graduations. Seven ceremonies will take place over three days - Tuesday 16 to Thursday 18 July. The University will also award an Honorary Fellowship to Canon Sarah Snyder, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s special advisor for reconciliation and founding director of the Rose Castle Foundation, and the title of Alumnus of the Year to Norfolk headteacher Imran Khan.

University of Cumbria is in the Top 10 for developing business leaders

A new study, involving 10 million graduates on professional networking site LinkedIn, has rated University of Cumbria as being in the Top 10 for developing business leaders and 14th overall in the Top 50 universities for business. The Capital on Tap study shows that the university, alongside prestigious institutions such as University of Oxford and London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE), is producing a higher percentage of c-suite executives than other UK universities.

University kicks off preseason training for League One club

Preseason training for Sky Bet League One contenders Morecambe FC has kicked off at the University of Cumbria in Lancaster. The Shrimps’ first-team squad members have spent their first day back for preseason training at the Bowerham Road campus. Led by lecturer Xavier Smith and colleagues within the university’s Institute of Health, undergraduate students on the BSc (Hons) Sport Rehabilitation degree programme have put the professional footballers through a series of human performance tests.

Graduation for pioneering nursing apprentices 

The first students to complete a pioneering university-level apprenticeship to qualify as registered nurses are celebrating their graduations.  As part of the drive to address the national shortage for nurses, the University of Cumbria and the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust co-designed the four-year Registered Nursing Degree Apprenticeship that was the first course of its kind in the country when it was launched in 2018.

Flagship university campus project is given the go ahead

Flagship university campus project is given the go ahead

Planning permission for University of Cumbria’s flagship Carlisle Citadels campus project has been approved today by Carlisle City Council’s Development Control committee. Designed by DAY Architectural Ltd., the plans include the retention of the two Grade I listed Citadel rotundas on the site along with other historic and heritage features, including the Woolworth and Burton’s buildings.
