Scott Usher has gone from hanging industrial doors on the set of Coronation Street to collecting his degree certificate in psychology after graduating from the University of Cumbria this week. But it was cause for double celebration as Scott, not only joined his colleagues graduating from the University of Cumbria’s Psychology BSc (Hons), he was also awarded a prestigious prize for academic achievement.

Nurse Leanne receives top award for dementia campaign

A Carlisle nurse who has recruited over 400 dementia friends has received a top award in recognition of her work. Leanne Story, originally for Carlisle, was awarded the Jim Cox Prize for most inspirational student at her University of Cumbria graduation ceremony (November 27.) The 24 year old adult nursing graduate won the prize for organising a conference earlier this year to raise awareness of the condition among fellow students.

And it is a double celebration for 48-year-old Lotty Romaniszyn, who lives in Carlisle. Not only has Lotty been celebrating her MSc in Occupational Therapy from the University of Cumbria at this week’s graduation ceremonies, she has also named postgraduate student of the year.

Midwife Helen fulfills lifetime ambition

Five years of study has resulted in a top prize for one of Cumbria’s newest midwives. Helen Baxter, from Ambleside, is among more than 1,000 University of Cumbria graduands celebrating at Carlisle Cathedral this week. The awards come just a few weeks after Helen began working as a midwife at the South Lakes Birth Centre. The £12m centre at the Furness General Hospital, Barrow, officially opened in February.

A group of three friends who all studied together and went on to set up a multi-media company have celebrated graduating and receiving an award in recognition of their entrepreneurship. Emily Dodd studied Wildlife Media and along with Adventure Media student Alex Fowkes and Sam Burton who studied Photography at the University of Cumbria’s Institute of the Arts collaborated to set themselves up in business in October 2015.

Inaugural Institute of Arts Community Engagement Prize winner Megan's 'labour of love' sees her gain commission

Her work to highlight disability by taking photographs of people with prosthetic limbs has seen photography student Megan Ogley not only graduate with a top award but be commissioned to carry on work that has become her passion. The University of Cumbria graduate from Pontefract worked with charities Steel Bones and PACE who introduced Megan to members of the prosthetics community. She encouraged them to share their stories and model for her with hundreds agreeing to take part.

There was never any question that David Osarhieme Nduka-Oladiti would study for a degree, it was almost in his DNA. A tradition set by his grandfather of moving from Nigeria to attend an English university, most family members followed, gaining a Masters in a diverse range of subjects. After moving to London with his mother from Nigeria’s Benin City as a child, no one could have imagined David wouldn’t study in the capital when the time came - until he discovered 'the greenness' of Cumbria.

Distinguished farmer and landowner becomes university honorary fellow

A farmer who has used conservation to help transform the fortunes of his family’s historic estate has received an honorary fellowship from the University of Cumbria. Giles Mounsey-Heysham, a Deputy Lieutenant of Cumbria, is the ninth generation to manage his ancestral family property, Castletown, near Rockcliffe, Carlisle. He is also a chartered surveyor, with his extensive career including time with Cluttons and Savills.

University of Cumbria ceremonies manager Suzanne Forrester is bringing Christmas cheer to campus - dressing up as an elf every day in December as part of a family fight back against a dementia diagnosis. Suzanne, 48, says she has been overwhelmed by the response of supporters who have helped raise £1,400 to date for the Alzheimer’s Society through her charity challenge.

University of Cumbria is in the Top 10 for developing business leaders

A new study, involving 10 million graduates on professional networking site LinkedIn, has rated University of Cumbria as being in the Top 10 for developing business leaders and 14th overall in the Top 50 universities for business. The Capital on Tap study shows that the university, alongside prestigious institutions such as University of Oxford and London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE), is producing a higher percentage of c-suite executives than other UK universities.

Unmasked: Students stage 2021 creative showcase

A brand new exhibition from the University of Cumbria Institute of the Arts is showcasing the creativity and talents of more than 200 artists. Launching on Tuesday 1 June, Unmasked: IoA Degree Show 2021 represents the work of students who are graduating this summer. There will also be a presence in Carlisle city centre, operated in line with government guidance.

Trainee teachers who are soon to graduate are behind a scheme to support parents and families amid uncertainty about pupils returning to school. More than 30 University of Cumbria final year Early Years, Primary and Secondary teacher training students are running a daily service for any parent or carer seeking help, advice or fresh ideas on how to make learning fun and meaningful for their children. The Homeschooling Support scheme is free and can be found on Facebook.

Today Vice Chancellor Professor Julie Mennell leads University of Cumbria in congratulating its Class of 2020. In the week that the university would usually welcome its latest graduands to Carlisle for a series of graduation ceremonies, the Vice Chancellor leads the congratulations in a new video that recognises and celebrates the achievements and impact of its Class of 2020. Informal virtual celebrations with staff and students have also been held across the university's five institutes.

Photography graduate Jordan Mossom has praised University of Cumbria for supporting him to study for and gain a degree while living with a rare muscle-wasting condition. Growing up with a passion for photography, Jordan did not think university would be an option open to him. He's now a proud member of University of Cumbria’s Class of 2020, successfully completing his degree this summer and seeing his work recognised by an international photography magazine.
