
University joins celebrations for NHS’ 70th anniversary in Carlisle
The University of Cumbria joins other NHS organisations and health union Unison this Saturday to celebrate the NHS’ 70th anniversary in Carlisle City Centre. The university will be hosting a stand outside the Town Hall 10am – 2pm and will celebrate the work of the NHS by shining a light on its past, present and future as seen through the eyes of its lecturers and nursing alumni.

Outstanding response to university 1000-mile bus tour
Students from the University of Cumbria will be over 450 miles into a 1000-mile tour of Northern England and Ireland by the end of this week, helping people to find their place at university. So far, students have taken over 450 enquiries from people looking to start university this year or next. Students have spoken to people from such far off places as Colombia and one individual is known to have travelled 105 miles from his home in Dublin to visit the bus in Belfast just to get some advice.

Spotlight shines on blue-light and health at careers event

The Health Care and Blue Light offers careers advice which is intended to encourage paramedics, nurses and police officers of the future to learn more about the professions.

Midwife Helen fulfills lifetime ambition
Five years of study has resulted in a top prize for one of Cumbria’s newest midwives. Helen Baxter, from Ambleside, is among more than 1,000 University of Cumbria graduands celebrating at Carlisle Cathedral this week. The awards come just a few weeks after Helen began working as a midwife at the South Lakes Birth Centre. The £12m centre at the Furness General Hospital, Barrow, officially opened in February.

Sepsis specialist returns to teach nurses of the future
Five years ago Stacey Wilson fulfilled a childhood ambition to become a nurse when she qualified upon graduating from the University of Cumbria. Six months ago Stacey secured promotion and she is now one of two sepsis nurse specialists who oversee the care and treatment of more than 3,000 patients per month at north Cumbria’s two main hospitals. On Monday (25 February), Stacey will be on site talking about recognising sepsis and patient care.

New institute’s ambition to tackle NHS staffing crisis
A new Institute of Health set up at the University of Cumbria aims to tackle the ongoing staffing crisis in the NHS with a dual purpose of recruiting more new staff in Cumbria as well as upskilling and retaining the current workforce. In addition to growing new recruits, the newly formed institute aims to support policy and research in relation to the NHS Long Term Plan with a renewed emphasis on increased funding for continuing professional development (CPD) and upskilling of current NHS staff.

University welcomes new grants for health care students
From September 2020, all those studying nursing, midwifery and many allied health professions will qualify for an annual grant of at least £5,000 with more available to students with children and those studying specialist disciplines where recruitment has been challenging.

#makeitblue campaign lights up former Cumbria hospital as university says thank you to coronavirus heroes
University of Cumbria joined forces with two county firms to say a special #makeitblue thank you to the NHS heroes, key workers and volunteers helping communities during the coronavirus lockdown. Its Grade II-listed Skiddaw building on the Fusehill Street campus in Carlisle was lit up in an eye-catching display to coincide with Thursday evening’s #clapforcarers. Formerly the city's general hospital, the site is now where student nurses and many more entering public services are educated.

Global programme aids student midwives
The University of Cumbria is taking its first steps towards gaining recognition from the UK Committee of UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative for its high-level training of student midwives. The Baby Friendly University Award recognises high levels of training in breastfeeding and baby-parent relationships to student midwives and those on other related allied health courses.
