Two university projects shortlisted for famed Educate North Awards

Not one but two university-led projects have been shortlisted for a prestigious Educate North Award. Cumbria Collaborative Outreach Programme developed the Hello Future programme, a series of motivating and engaging workshops, residentials, events, mentoring and resources to increase numbers of young people entering higher education. About Being, sees stroke survivors in Carlisle offered weekly dance and movement sessions to support and maintain their ongoing recovery and rehabilitation.

Susie Tate and the ‘About Being’ team made up of lecturers and students studying dance, occupational therapy and physiotherapy are today named as one of the nation’s lifesavers – the top 100 individuals or groups based in universities whose work is saving lives and making life-changing differences to the nation’s health and wellbeing.

New institute’s ambition to tackle NHS staffing crisis

A new Institute of Health set up at the University of Cumbria aims to tackle the ongoing staffing crisis in the NHS with a dual purpose of recruiting more new staff in Cumbria as well as upskilling and retaining the current workforce. In addition to growing new recruits, the newly formed institute aims to support policy and research in relation to the NHS Long Term Plan with a renewed emphasis on increased funding for continuing professional development (CPD) and upskilling of current NHS staff.

#makeitblue campaign lights up former Cumbria hospital as university says thank you to coronavirus heroes

University of Cumbria joined forces with two county firms to say a special #makeitblue thank you to the NHS heroes, key workers and volunteers helping communities during the coronavirus lockdown. Its Grade II-listed Skiddaw building on the Fusehill Street campus in Carlisle was lit up in an eye-catching display to coincide with Thursday evening’s #clapforcarers. Formerly the city's general hospital, the site is now where student nurses and many more entering public services are educated.

After it was revealed in a report from National Foundation of Educational Research that a third of children are not engaging with school work set, recent graduates have set up initiatives in Carlisle to help support children and families in their educational but also their emotional needs.

University of Cumbria and Imperial College London announce plans for new medical school in Carlisle

The University of Cumbria and Imperial College London are working together to launch a new graduate entry medical school in Carlisle.The new school, which aims to enrol its first students in autumn 2025, will train new doctors for Cumbria and North West England to transform healthcare in local communities.
