Student wellbeing service expands

The University of Cumbria is to expand the wellbeing support it offers students in Ambleside, Lancaster and Carlisle. The university, which has received praise for taking a lead in offering widespread training for staff working with students, is now recruiting three part-time mental health case workers.

Pioneering library smart card trialled at Ambleside campus

Students joining the University of Cumbria at Ambleside will be able to make more use of the campus library this term thanks to the development of an innovative programme, which can capture information and display details on their smartphone or tablet. Staff have developed what is thought to be pioneering library ‘smart card’ which uses a quick response (QR) code to be read by digital devices.

Studying subjects ranging from arts to zoology and joining from all over the UK, the new arrivals will bring added vibrancy to the communities they will call home for the next few years.

The initiative, called Get More Books, is aimed at helping undergraduate and postgraduate students enjoy wider access to relevant reading material irrespective of which course they are studying or where.

A portal that at the touch of a button allows free access to a varied wealth of research, carried out by students and staff at Cumbria’s university, is being celebrated this month From pieces of work examining mental illness and the role society plays in health to considering how to tackle a condition affecting primates in sub-Saharan Africa, there are thousands of thought-provoking items held online. Known as Insight the University of Cumbria’s digital repository is nearly ten years old.

Brit Rock film show aims to benefit university climbing club

A chance meeting with outdoor film-maker Alistair Lee has led to a collaboration which will see the Ambleside campus of the University of Cumbria play host to a series of breathtaking films at an event to raise money for university's mountaineering club. Among those shown as part of the Brit Rock Tour will be one focusing on Lake District climber Anna Taylor. The film show will be held in the Percival Lecture Theatre, Rydal Road, Ambleside on Friday 2 November at 730pm.

‘Next generation’ student environmentalist selected for prestigious lecture

A University of Cumbria student touted as ‘the next generation of speakers’ has been selected to give a microlecture on adventure and discovery at the Royal Geographic Society (RGS). Originally from Norfolk, Taylor Butler-Eldridge, 25, will share his experience of working with Surfer’s Against Sewage inspiring school children in Cornwall and educating them about the impact of plastic pollution on marine ecology.
