Honours for peace advisor and high-flying headteacher as 1,000 graduands prepare to celebrate

Up to 4,000 people will flock to Carlisle Cathedral next week for the University of Cumbria’s 2019 summer graduations. Seven ceremonies will take place over three days - Tuesday 16 to Thursday 18 July. The University will also award an Honorary Fellowship to Canon Sarah Snyder, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s special advisor for reconciliation and founding director of the Rose Castle Foundation, and the title of Alumnus of the Year to Norfolk headteacher Imran Khan.

The desire to teach – it’s in the family!

A North Yorkshire couple who found love whilst training to be teachers in the Lake District almost 30 years ago have returned to Cumbria to watch their daughter graduate. Katie Pritchard-Jenkins, 21, has completed her BSc Outdoor Adventure and Environment degree at the University of Cumbria’s Ambleside campus and is planning to follow her parents’ example and become a teacher. Her proud parents Adam and Gill trained at the same site 30 years ago when it was known as Charlotte Mason College.

Television’s Tommy Shelby – the kingpin character of BAFTA award-winning Peaky Blinders – is giving graduate illustrator Harry G Ward a career boost. A digital painting by the 23-year-old – entitled ‘Cracks’ - is gracing billboards on roadsides up and down the country as well as the BBC’s digital, online and social platforms as part of a major publicity campaign by the broadcaster to promote the fifth series of screenwriter Steven Knight’s crime-gang drama.

University of Cumbria staff have formed a new club that is busy making handmade scrubs and other items for frontline NHS and care sector workers during the coronavirus pandemic. As the country marks Volunteers’ Week, the University of Cumbria Scrubs Club currently has 16 colleagues from across operational areas and its campuses actively volunteering their time, talent and effort for the cause.

More than 30 University of Cumbria final year Early Years, Primary and Secondary teacher training students are running a daily service for any parent or carer seeking help, advice or fresh ideas on how to make learning fun and meaningful for their children. The Homeschooling Support scheme is free and can be found on Facebook.

The Baby Friendly University Award recognises high levels of training in breastfeeding and baby-parent relationships to student midwives and those on other related allied health courses.

Acclaimed filmmaker and University of Cumbria Professor of Practice Terry Abraham is celebrating Royal Television Society success. The concluding chapter of his ‘Life on a Mountain’ series, about Helvellyn in the Lake District, has been named Best Factual Production at the RTS North East and the Border Awards 2022. Film and TV students from the university's Institute of Arts were also shortlisted in the regional RTS awards.
