You can be certain of a high quality course with committed tutors. You can also be certain of a friendly atmosphere and an ethos where ‘every student matters’. We look forward to seeing you in September.
When we meet in Welcome Week sessions have been timetabled to enable you to get to know your tutors and fellow students on the course. There are also some tasks that you will be asked to complete and bring to share with your Personal Tutor at your first tutorial.
Pre-course Preparation
Introduction
We are looking forward to welcoming you at the University of Cumbria. Gaining recent experience in school will be valuable during the weeks prior to your course start date. We have also designed some short tasks to help you to prepare for your understanding of primary education.
Task One
The Times Educational Supplement [TES] is a weekly paper publication which is important up-to-date reading for teachers. You can either purchase it hard copy [available on a Friday in most supermarkets or newsagents] or you can refer to the online site. We suggest you focus on the NEWS only tab.
We would like you to bring 3 articles you have engaged with from the TES to discuss during Welcome Week.
Task Two
Read the Department for Education’s Teachers’ Standards. Familiarise yourself with the professional characteristics and requirements of a teacher and be ready to share your observations during Welcome Week discussions.
Possible Books to Buy
Previous students have told us it would be useful to know about some books we would recommend that students buy before they arrive. Although there are many books available in the library and as e-books when you get here, some key texts that you will use often throughout the course are:
Cooper, H. and Elton-Chalcraft, S. (2018) Professional studies in primary education. 3rd edn. London : Sage
Haylock, D. & Manning, R. (2014) Mathematics explained for primary teachers. 5th edn. London: Sage
Medwell, J. (2012) Primary English : teaching theory and practice. 6th ed., Exeter: Learning Matters.
And possibly also … Medwell, J. (2017) Primary English : knowledge and understanding. 8th edn. London : Sage.
