The Health Care Professionals Council is the registering authority for social workers in England and Wales and also approves social work courses. You will find useful information on this website in respect of social work education.

It would be beneficial to also read and take note of media articles and new stories in the press which will assist and keep you informed of changes to policy and practice and will inform discussion throughout the course.

Reading “Community Care”, a periodical publication which keeps social workers in practice up to date about changes and developments in the field, will be of benefit to you too.

You might like to do some prior reading over the summer before you come, to prepare yourself for starting the course. Learning Matters produces a whole series of introductory texts in social work, subtitled ‘Transforming social work practice’, covering topics such as social work with children and families, social work and mental health, social work with older people and so on.
